Title:
Christ Crucified Between the Two Thieves : "The Three Crosses" exhibition label Narrative 1
Narrative: Rembrandt van Rijn exemplifies his achievement as a great engraver as well as painter. The fourth state of this print highlights Rembrandt’s dramatic vision for Christ’s final moments on the Cross. The engraving is executed on a copperplate in drypoint which creates the rich velvety tone of burr that veils the figures in darkness. It is a scene of mourning where focus is held upon the crucified Christ who hangs ominously in the background between the two thieves. His naked torso exemplifies the tension, pain and sorrow of the crucifixion. Distinct from previous states, the soft and focused light illuminates the frail body of Christ accentuating Christ’s emotionality.
