Title:
The Sea Monster exhibition label Narrative 1
Narrative: This elaborate print recalls several abduction classical myths, but upon further investigation it is evident that it corresponds to none of them. Rather, Dürer has used this print to express his individual creative force. Resting effortlessly upon her antlered semi-human captor, the nude woman luxuriously poses at the centre of the composition. Reclining languorously over her captor’s scaly lower body, arabesque waves embrace her body and place it at the fore of the decorative composition. All emphasis has been removed from the narrative, leaving the nude to act autonomously in testament to Dürer’s ability as an artist and engraver.
