Title:
Madonna and Child with a Parrot exhibition label Narrative 1
Narrative: Beham was a 16th century print-maker working in Nuremberg. Known as one of the so-called 'Little Masters' from the small scale of his engravings, he was one of the most productive graphic artists of his generation, with an output of about 250 engravings and over a thousand woodcuts. In the image we see the Madonna and child, with a parrot a popular inclusion with artists such as Van Eyck. At first glance, it would appear that Mary is offering up her breast to feed baby Jesus, but upon closer inspection we see it is an apple. Depiction of an unclad Mary would not have been approved of at this time.
