F.L. Griggs
Fen Monastery
The Fen Monastery is an imaginary, symbolic ruin, influenced by the ruined churches and monasteries in the fenlands of Cambridgeshire and Ely. This superbly sombre plate depicts not merely the decay of a building, but the abandonment of faith.
Griggs represents an extreme in the tradition of English landscape etching begun by Seymour Haden. He was devoted to mediaeval architecture, and his prints hark back to days long gone with a strong sense of melancholy.
