Title:
The Sea Monster exhibition label Narrative 1
Narrative:

Dürer’s engraving has been the subject of much controversy and debate.  Various mythological interpretations have been linked to the print, the most prominent being the love story of Glaucus and Scylla. If the print does in fact portray the myth of the sea god and the beautiful sea nymph, it is of a rather different nature to the usual depiction associated with the myth. It was believed that Scylla was horrified by the sea god and his looks, but Dürer’s woman appears at ease with the sea creature the lures her away from land.
