Title:
Madonna and Child in a Landscape exhibition label Narrative 1
Narrative: A contemporary and associate of Dürer and Burgkmair, Altdorfer is ranked as one of the foremost figures in German art. He produced paintings, engravings, etchings and woodcuts as well as numerous drawings, and there is evidence that he also worked as an architect. He lived in great style and was a councillor of the city of Ratisbon. His art is characterised by fine and delicate workmanship, and is pervaded by a poetic grace and sympathy for the natural world unmatched by any of his contemporaries. It was Altdorfer who make landscape a serious subject in Western art.
