Narrative: These two creatures dared to challenge Apollo’s superiority as a musician. When the satyr Marsyas played the flute in unsuccessful competition with Apollo, the god flayed him as punishment. Pan, after losing to Apollo in another musical contest, was chastised by having his ears turned into those of an ass.
