Grainger began collecting artefacts from diverse cultural groups during his concert tours before World War One. His ethnographic collection grew to include costumes, masks, headwear, footwear, adornments, utensils and weapons. During his tour in 1908-09 he became interested in weaving jewellery and accoutrements from glass beads, and also began an extensive collection of bead artefacts that included items from Melanesia, Polynesia, North America and South Africa.
